How to make Halloween pancake shapes?
Serves 2
Prep time: 30 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes | Total time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
1-1/2 cups flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 large egg
3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk
2-1/2 tablespoons canola oil
Nonstick cooking spray (may not need this if using a nonstick pan)
2 tablespoons chocolate sprinkles
1-1/2 tablespoons black candy sprinkles
1 tablespoon orange candy sprinkles
8 candy eyeballs
2 Oreo sandwich cookies (separate sides of the sandwich, discard the filling)
8 small squirts orange food coloring gel (or more for desired color)
1-1/2 cups Cool Whip topping
2 tablespoons chocolate sauce
1 tablespoon honey (or agave nectar or pancake syrup)
1 large squeeze bottle with narrow spout
1 small squeeze bottle with a narrow spout
Directions:
To a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, egg, milk and canola oil. Whisk together until smooth.
To a separate small bowl, transfer just 1 small ladle of batter, and add the orange food coloring gel. Whisk together, then transfer the orange batter to a small squeeze bottle, and set it aside.
Put a funnel in the top of a squeeze bottle. Ladle the remaining batter into the funnel until the bottle is almost full. Leave about 1 inch of empty space at the top of the bottle to make room for the batter to rise a little from the baking powder.
Spray a large griddle or skillet with nonstick cooking spray (skip this step if using a nonstick pan). Heat the pan on low to medium heat.
For the pumpkin: On the left side of the griddle, using the orange pancake batter, outline a circle, and fill it in with batter. At the top of the pumpkin, outline a witch's hat, and fill it in with batter.
For the spider: In the middle of the griddle at the top, draw a circle, and fill it in with batter. Then add four legs on each side of the spider.
For the mummy: On the bottom right side of the griddle, outline the mummy, and fill it in with batter.
Using a long spatula, very carefully turn each pancake over when the bottom side turns a
light golden color.
For the pumpkin: Turn it on the same side, facing up, as when the shape was drawn. On the top of the hat, spread a thin layer of chocolate sauce. Sprinkle black candy on top of the chocolate. Lightly spread honey on top of the orange pumpkin, and sprinkle orange candy on top. Cut the Oreo cookies to form the eyes, nose and smile for each pumpkin.
For the mummy: Turn it on the opposite side, facing up, as when the shape was drawn. Add the eyeballs. Use a small spoon to make "lines" of Cool Whip topping from head to toe, with the exception over the eyes.
For the spider: Turn it on the opposite side, facing up, as when the shape was drawn. Using the back of a small spoon spread a layer of chocolate sauce on top. Top with chocolate sprinkles, and add the eyes.
Serve warm. Enjoy!
